Creep-feed grinding took a giant leap in productivity and part surface integrity after Dr. Salmon's research work was published in 1979. He developed the Continuous-Dress Creep-Feed (CDCF) grinding process where a diamond roll dresser is used to dress the grinding wheel at the same time it is grinding the workpiece. The grinding wheel was obviously getting smaller all the time it was grinding, so CNC was used to maintain the wheel position with respect to the workpiece however the CNC was controlling all aspects of the process and machine movement. It opened up a whole new market of applications for creep-feed grinding on a surface grinder. The parts no longer had to be flat or form grinds.
